Opening Toward Disrupted and Transformative Professional Learning

How might educators open their pedagogy, toolkits, and perspectives toward disruptive and transformative professional learning? This question will motivate Remi’s remarks about how the blended boundaries of 21st century learning make possible open education. Specifically, Remi will address divergent and promising interpretations of open education by discussing: a) educator practice of critical digital pedagogy; b) methods of collaborative inquiry as afforded by emerging technology platforms and social practices; and c) possibilities for a more equitable and transformative social contract for schooling, teaching, and learning.

Adventures in Deep Learning - Exposed in 3D

Come and explore how to make the shift into Deep Learning. Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB) has been recognized as one of the most innovative school boards in Canada by the Canadian Education Association. In this session OCSB educators will have you explore elements of their district programs with Virtual Reality, dive into tools that change practice, model new environments for learning, and highlight practices that help develop the six C’s that are the core for successful students in an ever-changing world (Character Education, Citizenship, Communication, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Collaboration, Creativity and Imagination).

This is a hands-on experience where you truly will Deep Dive into the technology that drives OCSB’s digital and academic success. Pre-registration is highly recommended in order to ensure you have login credentials.  Those who have not pre-registered may not be able to sign on during the session.

By registering for this session you agree to have your email address shared with presenters in advance for signing onto OCSB's system.  Your email will be removed from the system after the session.

Coding Unplugged -No Strings attached

When "Computer Coding" and "App Development" entered the common lexicon, educators tended to react with either fear or enthusiasm. Now that we are *here*-- immersed in the renewed curriculum, and with an understanding of incorporating Coding into it...authentically... with concerns swirling around regarding screen time and automatons vs critical thinkers, how can coding be included and alleviate the angst? Join me for a fun-filled and active hour of coding-- with no screens, no devices, barely even any electricity. Activities and resources you can use in your classroom tomorrow-- that teach coding from the perspective of Challenge Based learning and problem solving.  Suitable for all grades k-12, and staff professional development.

Engaging ALL your students in Robotics
Limited Capacity seats available

The coming decade will be defined by the largest workforce transition in the history of mankind. Programming and Robotics Literacy are becoming key differentiators in employability across virtually all industries, but less than 3% of students have historically shown interest in these areas.
Dennis has demonstrated robotics to more than 10,000 students from grades 4-12, and following his presentation 90% of ALL students indicate that they would like to learn robotics.
In this fun hands-on session, you’ll learn how to engage all your students in robotics and programming. You’ll program a humanoid robot to talk, wave, respond to your voice, and even recognize you and greet you by name! ANYONE CAN DO THIS! NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE OR PROGRAMMING KNOWLEDGE IS NECESSARY.

Lego Mindstorm and the FLL competition
This session will start with an overview of the FIRST series of competitions and their goal to promote recognition in Science and Technology. We will then cover the experiences of a first year team in the Lego League level, including student voice. There will be a hands-on opportunity to try the Lego Mindstorms EV3 coding program out on sample robot(s) using some of the challenge pieces provided in this year’s competition. If time allows, participants may have the opportunity to modify the robot build.

Blending our way to Competency-based Education
What kind of resources do teachers need to make in growth the core and curricular competencies evident in their classroom? What is the role of technology in this shift? In this session we will discuss how digital curriculum in general, and StudyForge’s math and science curriculaware in particular, can support teachers in moving towards the new BCED’s plan focus on competencies, without sacrificing rigorous knowledge and understanding of the content.

Badging as a Source of Recognition for Professional Development
Over the last seven years LEARN has developed a PD Model that assists our online teachers to better understand how teaching with a constructivist approach can assist their learners to become independent and active participants in relation to their own learning. This past year we added a new flair to the PD model – Online Badging. The purpose of the Badging was to provide recognition for training and professional learning that online teachers need to follow. The online Badging process allows educators to access PD as needed, at their own pace and around their own schedules. At the same time they receive recognition for their efforts. We have organized these badges based on the needs of the educator and the students they service.

Design Thinking for Blended Boundaries

This hands-on and fast-paced workshop will introduce participants to the design thinking process, and will also guide participants through a series of iterative challenges that question and explore the blended boundaries of 21st century learning. Remi will begin by showcasing a design thinking toolkit developed by the Institute for Innovation in Education. This toolkit, comprised of playing cards, will help participants experience an approach to design thinking that includes discovering a blended learning challenge, framing their problem, imagining potential processes and solutions, creating through prototyping, expanding through perspective-taking, and receiving feedback from others. Participants should bring a pencil or pen, a notebook with blank paper, and a disposition toward creativity and collaboration. Digital technology is welcome but not required.
